Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. She did not pursue acting as a career until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can cause. Perry states that she did not want to perform in high school, but she decided to begin acting as a social activity during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. After graduating Perry went to New York to search for TV work, landing a few roles on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led her back to California where she found acting work. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC Drama Scandal. She also played the older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was which is a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The character was assigned by audition regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the role.
